Respiratory Therapy Care

Our Respiratory Care Team at SMC provides a comprehensive program of respiratory care services on both an inpatient and outpatient basis. Respiratory therapists are an integral part of a hospital’s healthcare team. SMC has four registered therapists and one registered polysomnographic technologist. Our licensed respiratory therapists work with physicians to evaluate and develop individual treatment plans on each patient.

The role of a respiratory therapist is to administer and assess the effectiveness of prescribed treatments, evaluate the effects on other body systems, evaluate the effect f non-pulmonary abnormalities on the cardiopulmonary function, and to relay this information to other members of the healthcare team. These functions are accomplished by therapeutic administration of oxygen, rehabilitation techniques, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and maintenance of natural and artificial airways. Specific tests are performed to assist the physician to diagnose and facilitate the monitoring and treatment of patients. These tests include the measurement of ventilatory volumes, pressures, flows, and the analysis of blood and respiratory gases.

With extensive training in pulmonary medicine and many years of professional experience, the team offers a comprehensive array of diagnostic, therapeutic, and educational services, including:
